You may be wondering what exactly a documentary family photographer DOES, and I don’t blame you. It’s definitely a different beast from traditional photography - that’s why I love it so much!
Because the work I do is so personal, I always start with a “Get to Know You” portion of the relationship. This can take place over the phone or via email (I much prefer phone calls as it gives us a better feel for one another right from the start) and it gives us a great foundation to build from.
Once you’ve reserved your session date, I’ll send over a client questionnaire. This is one of my favorite parts of the process (besides the shoot itself, of course!), because the answers you provide here will help shape the way the session goes. In the questionnaire I get to learn more about your personalities, your style, your values. That last one is key, it’s where I start to really understand your dynamic and what’s important to you.
During your session I focus mostly on being a fly on the wall of your life. I’ll follow you as you go about your daily life, finding unique ways, angles, and lighting situations to capture the moments that make your story uniquely yours.
I have a lot of clients who are initially worried that without carefully constructed poses, the photos won’t be flattering, but I promise that’s not the case. As a professional photographer, at the end of the day it’s my job to make you look good. The reason I approach photography the way I do is because capturing those authentic moments in a way that looks artistic, raw, and still beautiful is so important. I love having the opportunity to show you that the way you live your life is beautiful all by itself.
That being said, I’m not going to leave you hanging if you’re totally uncomfortable. When the scene calls for it I will help guide you into realistic, flattering poses that naturally evoke emotion. More often than not, though, the scene simply calls for me finding the next best way to capture the natural beauty you’re exuding through living your life.
Once the session is over, I spend a lot of time and love carefully curating and creating artistic, soulful images for your final gallery and any additional pieces included in your package. I consider it an honor and a privilege to be able to document your life in such a personal way. I take that responsibility very seriously, immersing myself in your story to choose and edit the images that tell it in the best, most authentic way possible.
